It’s Apple Picking Season in South Orange

apple picking 4

It’s finally that time of year when the leaves are changing, the breeze is cool and crisp and nearby orchards are budding with apples that are ripe for the picking. Whether you want to munch on them right from the trees or bring them home to cook up an apple pie in your Gaslight Commons kitchen, now is the time to go apple picking.

Don’t worry, we have you covered if you’re not sure what farms to check out to find that perfect apple. Grab the whole family this weekend and spend a few hours at some of these popular apple orchards!

Riamede Farm, located at 122 Oakdale Rd, Chester which is a 40 minute drive from your Gaslight Commons apartment, features 34 varieties of apples ranging from traditional classics to heirloom specialties to modern favorites.

The early apple varieties begin to ripen the first week of September when they open for their pick your own apple season. The other apple varieties ripen over the course of the next six to seven apple harvest weeks, so a weekly trip to Riamede is necessary to catch each variety at its apple tree ripened best!

Hillview Farms, located at 223 Meyersville Rd, Gillette which is 25 minutes from your Gaslight Commons apartment, is a quaint, old fashioned, and yet up-to-date working farm with a family history that spans five generations.

The farm is known for holding on to some of their favorite older varieties of apples (Macoun 1923, Empire, 1968, Winesap, 1800s), but they are always replanting with the newest and best available. Notable “new” apples at the farm are cameo, Honeycrisp, Suncrisp and Bumpy Mac (a highly colored and superior flavored Macintosh.)
